In full disclosure, this author supported Donald Trump in the 2020 elections over the alternatives because Trump proved himself to be committed to implementing many of the policies that conservatives supported. Despite his rhetoric that often got him in trouble with both the right and the left, Trump did accomplish many things during his presidency that conservative Christians should be thankful for. That being said, Trump’s latest attempt at wooing Christians to support him may possibly be the death knell that ends conservative support for him.

To be clear, I do believe there were massive shenanigans that took place during the 2020 election cycle and I don’t believe there was enough investigation into it to prove one way or another if it would have made enough difference to swing the election. But Trump isn’t going to win support by invoking the nation’s most notorious false prophet to stand with him at his rally and pray for him.

It is clear that Trump is completely out of touch with his Evangelical base. During his last rally, Trump brought in rank heretic, Kenneth Copeland, to pray.

Kenneth Copeland, a self-appointed prophet and a literal circus clown disguised as a pastor, is known for his many many outlandish claims including multiple false prophecies about COVID-19 coming to an end. Copeland is a multi-millionaire who has made his fortune off the backs of unsuspecting followers who cling to his Word of Faith teachings.

Copeland teaches that he can heal people by laying hands on them–and pushing them over, including a man in a wheelchair–and teaches that God is essentially a genie-in-a-bottle who responds to financial giving with multifold financial rewards.

Kenneth Copeland is an arduous blasphemer, idolater, and mocker of God. In a recently surfaced sound bite of one of his many blasphemous sermons over the years, one stood out. Copeland says that Jesus’ “little wormy spirit” went to Hell where he then defeated Satan. It is typical charismatic theology to say that after Jesus died on the cross he went to Hell to battle Satan, and even though it’s in some versions of the creeds, it is not actually what the Scriptures teach. Jesus won the battle on the cross when he said “it is finished.”

On the other hand, Ron DeSantis appears to have a little more discernment when choosing a minister to stand with him. DeSantis recently asked Tom Ascol, a conservative Southern Baptist pastor who stands squarely on the Word of God as his authority in all things and shares a genuine love for the lost people of this nation and the world as opposed to Copeland who worships idols and only cares about temporal blessings.

To be clear, I’d still support Trump if he were the nominee as he is certainly better that any Democrat politician. But it certainly seems like DeSantis has a better track record of actually caring about and supporting the things Evangelical Christians care about. Either way, God’s will be done and let’s continue to pray for that.
