Beware of the Social Justice Buzzword “Equity,” It’s Not the Same Thing as “Equality”

Evangelicals are never more than right behind the culture when it comes to social justice. Whatever the progressive left does politically, the progressive left Church soon follows suit. Spearheaded by outlets such as The Gospel Coalition and the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, such leftist ideologies as “racial justice” have made deep inroads into the Evangelical Church and the movement has replaced the gospel with carnal works.

One of the up and rising buzzwords of the social justice movement is “equity.” When people hear the word “equity,” it’s easy to conflate this with “equality.” They do not mean the same thing.

What is Equality

In a nutshell, equality means treating people the same. It is equal treatment under the law, equal opportunity, etc. All people are given the same level playing ground when it comes to fairness.

Equality is a biblical concept, for God himself shows no partiality (Romans 2:11). Further, in Christ, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28), and “The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all (Proverbs 22:2). All people are treated equally without discrimination based upon such things as race or sex or other factors beyond their control.

Equity is not this.

What is Equity

Succinctly stated, equity is equality of outcome, as opposed to equal treatment. In other words, equity ensures that all people are treated how they need to be treated to achieve the same results.

In the social justice movement, this means such things as affirmative action, race-based incentives, and positive discrimination. People are not treated as equals. We see this played out in such things as wealth redistribution (which the Bible refers to as theft) and intersectionality (which the Bible refers to as partiality). Equity is an anti-gospel ideology and should be flatly rejected by the Church.

Yet, despite the unbiblical concept that masquerades as something good, many Evangelicals are either knowingly or unknowingly promoting this. Matt Chandler, a woke Southern Baptist mega-church pastor is famous for saying that he would hire an “African American 7” over an “Anglo 8” for no other reason than the color of their skin.

But the Evangelical woke movement isn’t about the gospel, it’s about fixing the world’s problems — real or perceived — in an effort to stay relevant to the culture and promote growth in the pews of dying denominations.
