One of my favorite follows on Twitter is Woke Preacher Clips (WPC). I’m the kind of person who is *mildly* entertained by the mass amounts of stupidity plaguing our world, but at the same time, I grieve over it in the hopes that God will open the eyes of some of these people. It’s really not funny, it’s just how some people process such a sad reality. Nonetheless, it is important to be informed on the state of our reality so we know how to navigate the waters.
One recent clip I saw that WPC posted is a former PCA pastor who went on The Gospel Coalition to brag about how he disciplined a bunch of Trump-supporting members of his church who left because he made life difficult for them. Here’s the clip:
Okay, so disclaimer first: I don’t know this pastor and the wider context doesn’t give enough detail for me to make a determinative judgment on this guy’s intentions here. There are certainly sects within the “MAGA” community who claim to be Christian but have clearly set aside biblical Christianity in favor of their political agenda. A glaring example of this would be Turning Point USA (TPUSA) and many of its supporters. Many of these guys have clearly compromised the gospel, even platforming homosexuals, in order to advance a religious-right movement that isn’t of God. Those kind of people, clearly, are out of line with biblical Christianity. If these are the kind this pastor is referring to, then, of course, they should be disciplined.
On the other hand, there are many, MANY, Bible-believing Christians who supported Trump and much of the MAGA movement while not compromising the gospel. It is possible to support many of the policies of the former president while not affirming his sin and lifestyle. It is possible to support a “drain the swamp” movement that seeks to expose and remove corrupt politicians and political agendas without supporting the personal sin of the president. It’s also possible to do so without holding the president up as some kind of Messiah figure, the greatest man who walked the earth since Christ Himself. Because, clearly, that isn’t true.

But faced with the choice between Trump and Biden, or Trump and Hillary, it is impossible to make a biblical case that voting for Trump or supporting his candidacy over the other was somehow sinful in and of itself.
On the other hand, it is impossible to make the case that voting for Democrats or supporting their pro-abortion, pro-LGBTQ, anti-Christian policies and platform is not sinful. It is. And this is where the hypocrisy of these pastors and church leaders comes into play. As a clear case of virtue signaling, this pastor above brags about disciplining Trump supporters who are leaving his church. And even if he did so rightly, assuming the possibility that they crossed the line into political idolatry at the expense of the gospel, you can rest assured that this same pastor did not discipline any of the Democrats in his congregation who voted to increase abortion, indoctrinate children with queer theory, and push all the other various godless progressive ideologies coming out of the Party of Hell.
In fact, the entire reason these pastors brag about disciplining Trump supporters is that they are trying to appease the vast amounts of godless progressives in their congregations. David Platt is another perfect example of this, telling his congregation that if they believe you can’t be a Christian while supporting the Party of Hell, then maybe his church isn’t the right church for them.
To be fair, I’m not a Trump supporter and I do believe that he should move on. At the same time, I am also concerned about the outcomes of many of these charges against him in court—not necessarily because of him, but because the rulings could set a precedent on how speech and certain freedoms can be limited. That being said, I cannot make a case that supporting him is indeed sinful, and it is clear that those pastors who did so, especially during the last election cycle, are hypocrites, and don’t actually care about truth or faithfulness.
