Pastor Mike Todd of the Transformation Church has been growing in popularity at an alarming rate, despite his repulsive and controversial behavior. Earlier this year, Todd made headlines for turning tithing into a million-dollar lottery, using his congregants as nothing more than pawns in his sick game. And just a few weeks ago, Todd made headlines again for spitting in his hands and rubbing them all over a congregant’s face during a so-called “sermon.” It’s clear that Todd cares more about shock value and self-promotion than he does about spreading the teachings of the Bible.

The incoherent ramblings of megachurch seeker-sensitive pastor, Mike Todd, just seem to get more confusing with every passing. For a pastor who just last week preached that God can’t do anything in this world without our cooperation, he now says that despite our cooperation, Jesus erased the sins of every single person in the world on the cross.

Now, let the disconnectedness of this sink in for a moment. As he cites the Scriptures’ repeated affirmation that Jesus died for “the whole world,” he, of course, fails to understand what this actually means and quickly slips into rank heresy. By his logic, he would have to affirm that either everyone goes to Heaven, or that a bunch of people are suffering eternal punishment in Hell for sins that Jesus already paid for.

Todd chose the latter, asserting that all these sinless people are now in Hell and that people don’t go to Hell for committing sin.

“I’m about to drop some knowledge on you,” Todd said, acting as though he has figured something out that’s been hidden from the Church for two thousand years, “that everybody has to be able to receive. And this may be a shocking statement. For some people, but people don’t go to hell for sin. Jesus already paid for that. They go to hell for unbelief. Like, this is why the church is so backwards, because we’re trying to make people work to prove to us that they’re good enough to be a part of our exclusive God club.”

And this is exactly where the breakdown in logic is for these seeker-sensitive types. Hell is a place of eternal punishment for those who have sinned against God. The concept of sin is central to the Bible’s understanding of the human condition and our relationship with God.

The Bible teaches that sin is anything that goes against God’s will or falls short of his standards of perfection. Sin separates us from God and causes us to fall short of his glory (Romans 3:23). Sin is not just a matter of breaking rules or committing immoral acts; it is a fundamental problem that affects every aspect of our lives.

In Romans 6:23, completely contradicting Todd’s notion that sinners don’t go to Hell for committing sin, the Apostle Paul writes, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This verse teaches that sin has consequences, and the ultimate consequence is death, which includes eternal separation from God in Hell.

In Revelation 21:8, the Bible lists several sins that will keep people out of heaven and send them to Hell: “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Throughout the Bible, we see that God is holy and just, and he cannot tolerate sin. But God is also loving and merciful, and he has provided a way for us to be saved from our sins through faith in Jesus Christ. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
