When it comes to abortion, you would expect those who actually claim to be pro-life to appreciate laws that actually stop the murder of innocent children in the womb. Alabama has done this, passing the Human Life Protection Act, a bill that would effectively ban all abortions in the state, classifying it as a felony offense punishable by 10 to 99 years in prison for anyone who commits an abortion.
However, many so-called “pro-life” Republicans and Christian leaders are complaining that this new ban on killing children is “too restrictive.” That includes the outspoken anti-abortion Pat Robertson.
“I think Alabama has gone too far,” Robertson said during an airing of The 700 Club, “They’ve passed a law that would give a 99-year prison sentence to people who commit abortions. There’s no exception for rape or incest. It’s an extreme law and they want to challenge Roe v. Wade, but my humble view is that this is not the case we want to bring to the Supreme Court because I think this one’ll lose.”
What these foolhardy phony conservative Christians don’t understand is that it isn’t about pragmatism, it’s about honoring God. Alabama has done something extraordinary, indeed, and it is by far the most just law regarding abortions that the United States has ever seen since Roe. V. Wade. It is the God-given duty of the government to wield the sword of justice and to protect citizens from injustice.
