Whether you love Paul Washer or hate him, you have to admit, this man was gifted with a powerful ability to draw one’s attention to their own pride and extract the kind of truth that makes one examine himself in light of the Scriptures and the gospel. Rarely do I walk away from a Paul Washer sermon without an overwhelming desire to examine my heart and make sure I’m in truly in the faith.

Despite that, Paul Washer apparently has a sense of humor, too. Washer, who is well-known for his line at his famous youth conference sermon, “I don’t know why you’re clapping, I’m talking about you,” quipped that line again after calling out the hipsters who think of themselves as “reformers” while wearing skinny jeans and sipping lattes at Starbucks.

“I want you to know…I really love the Reformers, but I’m really getting tired of that language,” Washer commanded. “Reformers didn’t call themselves reformers, they just wanted to be biblical.”

“You can sit in Starbucks all day long with your skinny jeans on and talk about reformers or you can pick up a Bible and start getting biblical,” he yelled as the entire sanctuary applauded.

He then quipped, “I don’t know why you’re clapping,” with a cheesy grin on his face. It’s good to see that even the most serious people in the world, like Paul Washer, can once in a while take off their hats and smile.
