During a recent The Gospel Coalition podcast, two contributors to the Woke, progressive Evangelical website, Justin Holcomb and Phillip Holmes, accused John MacArthur of idol worship because of MacArthur’s strong stance against leftist politics and its influence in the Church.

John MacArthur made it clear that those who profess Christ should support Donald Trump, not because Donald Trump is some savior of the nation or planet, but because Donald Trump — and the Republican party — support national policies that are aligned much closer with a Christian worldview than the God-hating, anti-Christian, anti-freedom left. But what these two numbskulls can’t grasp — besides the fact that John MacArthur is absolutely right — is that God hates everything the Democrat party stands for.

As Reformation Charlotte has relentlessly argued, voting Democrat is a sign that one has either not given any real biblical thought to their responsibility as a Christian to vote wisely, or, more than likely, that person is probably not a Christian at all.

The Democratic party, at its core, is radically opposed to the standard of morality set forth in Scripture. Whether it be the continual expansion of the slaughtering of innocent children in the womb, the clamoring for the promotion of homosexuality and other forms of sexual perversions, including feminism, or the insistent push for redistributive theft, it goes without saying that everything the Democrat party stands for is biblically immoral. Jesus did not die for these things, he died because of these things–to free us from them.

Let’s be clear: your political positions, activism, or support have no bearing on your salvation–zero. However, if you claim to be a Christian, transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit and bought by the blood of Jesus Christ, the Scriptures say that you will be given a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26) and you are being sanctified unto good works (Ephesians 2:10). So let me spell this out for you. This means you cannot be a Christian while supporting the slaughter of innocent children, gay rights, gay propaganda, “gay Christianity,” theft (redistribution of wealth), lawlessness (i.e. open borders), a complete and total lack of individual responsibility (i.e. nanny state welfare system, single payer insurance, etc.), or the endless sweeping away of our right to worship God freely. If you support this godless ideology, or support candidates that do, don’t expect me to treat you as a fellow Christian.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not shilling for the Republican party. I realize that the Republican party is corrupt, inside and out. However, there is not an official push–at least not right now–in the Republican party to stand against and oppose every single one of God’s moral laws. Conservatism doesn’t save, only Jesus Christ does. But if you understand the gospel, then you can’t deny that the gospel produces conservatism as its fruit.

This is clearly the same point John MacArthur was trying to make, and yet, The Gospel Coalition tries to paint MacArthur as an idolater. As Christians, we are not entitled to our own, differing views on political issues. We are obligated to seek the will of God and to hold to those views. The real idolaters are the leftists who continue to place the will of man above the will of God.
