Delman Coates, the senior pastor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church, recently delivered a sermon that could only be described as theological arson. Coates didn’t just bend the truth—he violently assaulted it, dragged it into a dark alley, and left it bleeding. He essentially raped the text of Scripture to accommodate his progressive ideology.
Imagine sitting in a church, expecting to hear the Word of God faithfully proclaimed, only to be blindsided by a brazen wrecking ball to biblical morality. Coates, with the smooth assurance of a con man, declared:
“Teaching Christians that sex before or outside of marriage is a sin may be tradition…but it is not something supported by the word of God.”
Just let that sink in for a second. According to Coates, every preacher, every theologian, every saint throughout Christian history—just misguided sheep, peddling baseless moralism.

He even had the nerve to insist, “There is no biblical basis for that teaching… It may sound sacrilegious to others, but I am obligated as a preacher of the word of God to preach the truth of the Bible and not to further myths, superstitions, and lies.”
The bizarre nature of that statement is staggering. Coates wants his audience to believe he’s some kind of modern-day prophetic hero, tearing down the oppressive towers of tradition to reveal the real truth hidden all along. In reality, he’s a pied piper of sexual permissiveness, leading his congregation straight into moral chaos.
This isn’t just sloppy theology—it’s reckless spiritual endangerment. The Greek word ‘porneia,’ which Coates so flippantly reinterprets, has never been limited to prostitution. It’s a broad term for sexual immorality—premarital sex, adultery, prostitution—all of it. To claim otherwise is not just ignorant—it’s maliciously deceptive.
Coates also lashed out at ‘Christian podcasts and social media influencers,’ accusing them of being ‘sincerely wrong’ about abstinence. Apparently, everyone who’s ever told a young person to save sex for marriage is just part of some oppressive purity-culture cabal.
You can literally hear the applause from the progressive peanut gallery as he justifies their sin, most likely all of them. But let’s not kid ourselves—Scripture is unambiguous about sexual purity. Paul’s admonition to ‘flee sexual immorality’ (1 Corinthians 6:18) doesn’t come with a footnote saying, ‘Unless you’re really into each other.’
Coates doesn’t just distort the truth, he bulldozes it. He’s not offering liberation—he’s selling bondage wrapped in shiny rhetoric. His sermon wasn’t just a slight departure from biblical orthodoxy—it was a complete betrayal.
The real tragedy isn’t that Coates is just wrong—it’s that he’s confidently, proudly, and unforgivably wrong, leading these people down a path of spiritual ruin.
