Repudiating the Right-Wing Idolatry of Trump and Believing Trump is a Good President are Not Mutually Exclusive

I constantly hear from the left-wing progressive branch of Evangelicalism that those who support President Donald Trump are selling out the gospel because we support a man who is immoral and we give credibility to his false testimony of Christian conversion by not calling him out on it. I want to be abundantly clear that I repudiate the right-wing religious idolatry as much as I do the left. It is distasteful and disgusting to see so many false teachers and right-wing compromisers fawn together over Donald Trump.

And I don’t mind naming names, so I’ll start with a (non-exhaustive) list of some of these. First and foremost, Paula White who is now the chair of Donald Trump’s Evangelical advisory board. Paula White is a false teacher and an idolater and her political fawning over Donald Trump and claiming that Trump is a Christian is disgusting.

Robert Jeffress — a highly popular Southern Baptist pastor — is horribly wrong. He is an idolater and has turned politics into his gospel. Robert Jeffress compromises the gospel by his association with Paula White and other false teachers surrounding Trump. I’ve talked about this before where Jeffress praises Donald Trump as though he is a deity. Jeffress also endorses Paula White’s book.

Also, Franklin Graham, Greg Laurie, Jack Graham, and a host of other Southern Baptist pastors who surround Donald Trump have endorsed Paula White. This is a serious compromise of the gospel and should be rightly condemned.

That being said, supporting the president while repudiating those who idolize the president are not mutually exclusive. Looking at the options, it is possible to not just look at Donald Trump as “better than the alternative,” but to actually appreciate his policies. Here are a few examples:

  • Believing that the United is sovereign and should defend its borders does not mean we believe Donald Trump is a Christian.
  • Believing that Donald Trump’s policies on abortion are better than we’ve seen in a long time does not mean we approve of Donald Trump’s past sexual immorality.
  • Believing that free speech and freedom of religion should be protected does not mean that we believe Donald Trump is a deity that should be worshiped.
  • Believing that Islam is known for harboring terrorism and that refugees from Muslim countries should be carefully and meticulously screened does not mean that we believe Donald Trump is the savior of the world.

These are just a few examples and I believe that the vast majority of Christians who support Donald Trump do not actually think the way that the idolaters of the religious right who surround Donald Trump think.

I have no reason to accept Donald Trump’s testimony and do not believe that Donald Trump is a Christian. He has absolutely engaged in immoral behavior during his life and as such, should be acknowledged. But — and I can’t state this any clearer than I already have — the reason Donald Trump’s immorality doesn’t matter the way a Democrat’s immorality does is that the Democrats are seeking to legislate their immorality into national policy.

I believe that the vast majority of Christians who support Donald Trump actually look at the policies of conservatism in general and those which Donald Trump supports and understand that as a Christian, it is impossible to support Democrat policies.

The SBC’s System is Broken, And It Can’t Be Fixed
