A couple of years ago, T.D. Jakes, a preacher known for his heretical anti-Trinitarian beliefs and promotion of the prosperity gospel, publicly humiliated his wife during a church service. Jakes declared in front of the congregation that his wife could “still twerk for the Lord.”

As his wife stood up to awkwardly acknowledge the misplaced adoration of a congregation misguided in their beliefs, Steven Furtick was observed nearby, enthusiastically clapping and cheering along with the crowd.

Jakes continued by complimenting his wife in a manner that appeared more worldly than godly, stating, “You the finest grandmama I ever saw in my life.” He went on to elaborate, “Five kids and nine grandkids and still rocking it.”

The comments were notably inappropriate, especially coming from a religious leader. By saying, “She can still twerk for the Lord,” Jakes lowered the dignity of his wife through language that associates with lewd acts typically found in strip clubs. This incident only further substantiated concerns about his theological and ethical standing.

But if that wasn’t awkward enough for Jakes’ wife, maybe this would be enough to set her over the edge. In another video, Jakes is seen preaching with his wife sitting on the stage as he declares the two are a team. “We’re a team if she’s hurting, we’re a team if she’s bleeding, we’re a team if she’s throwing up, we’re a team if she’s got diarrhea…” I don’t know about you, but this doesn’t seem like a man who honors his wife.
