In an era where absurdity appears to have become the new norm, an article at New Ways Ministry titled Queer Theory and Theology Can Help Widen Church’s Understandings of God and Creation epitomizes this trend with stunning arrogance. The claims made in this hit piece against orthodox, biblical Christianity are, to put it mildly, bewildering—even disorienting.

The author suggests that we can bolster our understanding of God and humanity through the adoption of queer theory and queer theology, proposing an exodus from the firmly entrenched concepts of male and female as if sound reason and the objective truth of the Bible are up for negotiation, able to be traded in for the latest societal theory du jour.

In this “ground-breaking revelation,” the author posits that we extend our comprehension of God beyond established gender norms, using a variety of arguments that would leave even the most flexible theologian stretching for comprehension. Despite the clearly defined gender-specific pronouns for God in the Bible, this proposition recommends we simply set centuries of theological understanding aside like an old, unfashionable hat.

Prepare yourself for a journey into a theological wonderland where the established paths are dismissed as antiquated and the untrodden trails of unorthodoxy are hailed as progress. Buckle up for a theological roller-coaster that tosses time-honored orthodoxy into the wind and takes us hurtling into a brave new world of speculative thinking and conjectural posturing. After all, why should we limit ourselves to a God as revealed in Scripture when we can remake Him in the image of contemporary ideologies?

You might wonder why I would waste time in refuting such absurd claims, but the reality is that much of the world, including professing Christendom, is being taken captive by these vain philosophies. In challenging this ridiculous article, it is necessary to take a strong stance grounded in the immutable truths revealed in Scripture.

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete. —2 Corinthians 10:5-6

This attempt to reinvent our understanding of God by adopting queer theory and theology represents a flagrant distortion of the Christian faith. This is not merely an academic exercise, but a blatant rebellion against the very nature of God as revealed in Scripture, a deeply troubling departure from the truth.

First, the article contends, “why not accept that gender identity can take on an infinite number of forms, especially in qualifying God who always transcends all these categories?” The implication is that we should forsake the established gender categories of male and female in our conception of God. Let it be stated clearly: this is a direct assault on the authority of Scripture, which unambiguously reveals God as masculine. The author’s suggestion of moving away from such a traditional understanding is an alarming move towards erasing the God of the Bible to replace Him with a deity molded to conform to contemporary societal ideologies.

The author also absurdly contends that understanding God as male perpetuates a patriarchal culture. The implication, though, is that a patriarchal culture is a bad thing. Yet, recognizing God as He reveals Himself in Scripture—as Father—is not about endorsing patriarchal superiority, but about acknowledging His sovereignty. God, as the Father, does not devalue or diminish the feminine, for Scripture clearly declares that all are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), irrespective of gender, and are equally cherished by Him.

The article goes so far as to suggest that understanding God through male imagery results in a limited, exclusionary God. While I’m no fan of icons and graven images, this argument is nothing more than a smokescreen. The true pathway to godliness lies not in our gender, race, or social status, but God’s sovereign election of us and our obedience to Christ and conformity to His standard.

The author goes on to quote Anne Guillard of European University Institute and Oxford University, who argues that the Church’s structure is inherently patriarchal. She contends, “It is not a question of replacing one text with another, but rather of taking the spiritual and intellectual liberty to go beyond this need to categorize by feminine and masculine…why not accept that gender identity can take on an infinite number of forms, especially in qualifying God who always transcends all these categories?”

Guillard’s contention that the Church’s structure is patriarchal, suggesting an inherent evil or unfairness, betrays a profound misunderstanding of the biblical model of patriarchy. The Bible presents patriarchy not as a social evil, but rather as part of God’s design for humanity—a design that, as the divine Creator’s handiwork, is inherently good.

Indeed, Christ disrupted many cultural norms of His time by treating women with dignity and grace, not because He rejected patriarchy, but because He recognized its true form, as defined in the New Testament. The New Testament presents a model of patriarchy where men and women perform complementary roles, both equally valuable in the eyes of God. This isn’t a model of societal patriarchy built on domination or degradation of women, but rather one of loving leadership and mutual respect, but most importantly, obedience to God.

In His divine wisdom, God crafted an order where each person—man or woman—has a unique and essential role to play. To rebel against this design isn’t progressive—rather, it is a direct contradiction of God’s divine and good intention for His creation.

As outlined in the article, Guillard posits that “even then, gender was a purely societal construct erased at the Resurrection.” This presumption made in the article that gender is merely a societal construct destined to be abolished at the Resurrection is blasphemous and is nothing more than a desperate reach to seek biblical affirmation of their perverted sexual desires.

These proponents of queer theology, in their quest for a gender-fluid understanding of God, are desperately twisting the Scripture, venturing into uncharted territories laden with speculative and unsubstantiated theories. They are attempting to chart a new gospel of perversion, detached from the entirety of God Himself, and then using the name of God to affirm their own rebellion against Him.

Such blasphemy completely departs from what the Bible reveals about God, humanity, and the world. Jesus Himself confirmed the male-female distinction in Matthew 19:4, where He said, “Haven’t you read…that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female.'” The Bible never portrays gender as a mere societal construct but rather as a part of God’s design from the beginning of creation.

This entire endeavor to redefine God, as presented in the article, is an alarming affront to Christianity and a stark departure from God’s self-revelation—the Bible. It is an attack on the heart of our faith and a rebellion against God Himself.

The Christian faith stands on the foundation of God’s revelation, His unchanging nature, and His eternal Word. We are not at liberty to bend and twist God’s identity to match contemporary cultural norms or to cushion the blow of truth. Rather, we are commissioned to hold fast to the Word of God and proclaim it with unwavering conviction.

Therefore, we must confront these destructive ideologies for what they are: a rebellion against the nature and revelation of God Himself. Let us anchor ourselves firmly in Scripture, resisting the corrosive tide of societal trends and theologically unfounded ideologies. And we must proclaim boldly and confidently the God of the Bible, who reveals Himself as Father, as He, as the unchanging and eternal One. His Word endures forever, and no human speculation or societal trend can alter His truth.
