David Hughes, lead pastor of Church by the Glades in Coral Springs, FL, has transformed his congregation into a theatrical spectacle that resembles a comedic performance more than a house of worship. In one Instagram post, Hughes stated “If there’s one thing we can guarantee with 100% certainty about Christmas at CBG, it’s this… you will not fall asleep!” Clearly, this demonstrates where Hughes’s mind is as he disregards the significance of Christ’s sacrifice and focuses on entertaining the masses.
Under Hughes’ guidance, the church has become an extravagant, sensationalist display with profane band performances and literal circus acts taking center stage—the essence of true worship and devotion is completely lost. True believers worldwide should be incensed by this distortion of the faith, as it lacks the reverence that God deserves. Were Jesus here today, he would undoubtedly express his displeasure by flipping over tables and driving out the money changers who exploit religion with this false gospel for profit.
The famous preacher Charles Spurgeon once forespoke of a time when clowns would entertain goats instead of shepherds feeding sheep. His insight was not prophetic, but rather a deep understanding of human nature and the doctrine of sin. But as we witness the clown show exemplified by Church by the Glades, we’re pretty sure that even Spurgeon would be astounded.
Church by the Glades has gained notoriety for its provocative and secular performances, incorporating elements like the Stormtrooper Dance, Disney Medleys, and covers of Beyonce’s Freedom—and most recently, the church performed a live rendition of Kendrick Lamar’s profanity-laden N95, which is rife with obscenities, blasphemy, and objectification of women. This egregious departure from the sanctity of worship must be acknowledged and addressed by the faithful.
But it isn’t just their performances that are called into question. During this “Easter Sunday” morning service, David Hughes named off a laundry list of rank heretics as he praised them for being the most successful and best preachers and pastors in the business.
“The best preacher in America…No, gosh there’s…some of my colleagues, they are just so gifted” Hughes preached. “You know, Craig Groeschel and Steven Furtick and Priscilla Shirer and Christine Caine. And he put a gun to my head, said, David, who’s the most talented preacher in this generation?”
“I go, probably. Yeah. TD. Jakes,” he said, naming a Trinity-denying heretic as the most talented preacher. “Someone said TD. Jakes…Bishop Jake’s in Dallas. He’s just his gifts are immense. His gifts with language, his charisma, by the way.”
He then goes on to name Joel Osteen and spends several minutes making fun of how he talks, but then goes on to praise him too as one of the best leaders in the Church.
