I’ve refrained from stating what I really think about people who pervert the gospel to advance their own ideological agendas, particularly those who would brush off the practice of abortion as an optional issue for Christians to concern themselves with the legality. But the fact of the matter is that these people make me want to vomit, and they should make you feel the same way.

In Revelation 3:16-18, God uses this language to describe the vile taste the “lukewarm” Christian leaves in His mouth—it makes Him want to vomit. These people are useless, in need of help but do not know it or seek it, and serve only to advance their own causes. God calls them to repent.

With a simple perusal of today’s church landscape, we see a number of these people who’ve propped themselves up as leading thinkers of the modern church but in reality, are nothing more than infiltrators seeking to devour the Bride of Christ. But what’s even worse than that is when these leaders, hearing the cries of the Church for clarity on political ideology, suggest instead that pastors should hide their political ideology from the congregation.

That’s exactly what Mark Dever and Ligon Duncan did during a panel discussion at the 2022 T4G Conference. Discussing the current political landscape within the Church, the two mused about how Samuel Miller, a founding professor at the (now apostate) Princeton Seminary, withheld his political ideology from his those under him.

DEVER: …poverty and I’ll pray about things like that to the one who can make a difference, and Republicans, Democrats, Independents in the congregation can hopefully say ‘amen’ to the prayers, because we want the welfare of everyone. I’m not getting into the prescriptive- cause SR74 to pass this week – You know, that’s, that’s over to the political process and mysterious sovereignty of God. You know, I’m gonna pray for these ends that we know are biblical.

DUNCAN: Biblical ends, I think that’s huge. And I have a quote, to kind of follow on the idea of sort of the spiritual mission of the church and what you’ve just said, from Samuel Miller, who was one of the founding professors at Princeton seminary, at the end of his life, he said this:

“I resolved more than 30 years ago, never to allow myself, either in public prayer or preaching, to utter a syllable in periods of great political excitement and party strife, that would enable any human being so much as to conjecture to which side in the political conflict I leaned.”

Now, he’s not saying ‘I’m not going to pray against somebody killing 6 million Jews’, or ‘I’m not going to pray when the Emperor Decius tells by people that they have to offer sacrifices to his spirit or die. I’m not going to say anything about that.’

But very often we will elevate matters of political strife to that level, when they are not that level. And Samuel Miller is saying Be very careful about that.

As I’ve stated repeatedly, one’s political ideology not be separated from one’s theology. In reality, for a Christian who claims Christ, it is NOT okay to vote for a Democrat as doing so is a clear and unambiguous violation of the commandments of God not only to love Him, but to love your neighbor—biblically. For a Christian, a robust political ideology must be rooted in a sound biblical theology and sound biblical theology cannot lead to opposing political ideologies. This is just their way to legitimize all the leftists who fill their pews as they make every attempt to appease them.
