Earlier today, Reformation Charlotte reported that gay “Christian” journalist, Jonathan Merritt–son of former Southern Baptist Convention president, James Merritt–announced that he was coming completely out of the closet. While it has been common knowledge that he has been a flaming gay activist for several years, until today, Merritt has not openly admitted his homosexuality.

Today is Jonathan’s 39th birthday–and to celebrate, he came out with a “coming out” message: “I’m raising a glass to my full and complete selfβ€”a gay man, beloved by God, who has endured the worst the world could throw at him and fought his way to health and wholeness.”

Following his thread on Twitter is a host of praises and hardy “amens” from the far-left camp of theological and political progressivism. It should go without saying that these unregenerates would sing his praises. However, the slew of mainstream Evangelicals–including Southern Baptist leaders–who are gushing and fawning over him as he comes out of the closet is frightening.

Of those would be Dwight McKissic–a Southern Baptist pastor who is currently on his way “off the bus” of the denomination because it isn’t woke enough–who couldn’t resist praising him up and down for his activism in promoting social justice causes.

It’s clear where this pastor’s priorities lie. He doesn’t really care about the eternal state of Jonathan Merritt’s soul; all he cares about is that he has been an outspoken advocate for Intersectionality and Critical Race Theory.

And then we have Karen Swallow Prior–a professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary who has repeatedly taken a shallow stance on LGBTQ issues–who also couldn’t resist fawning over the gay darling of Evangelical journalism.

And the problem isn’t even that these people are affirming him–though they are doing so tacitly. The problem is that they are ignoring him completely, refusing to call him to repent and believe the gospel, all while professing the name of Christ.
