TGC Contributor Says Same-Sex Attraction Not Worse Than Opposite-Sex Attraction

by | Nov 18, 2019 | Blog, News, The Church | 0 comments

Rebecca McLaughlin, a The Gospel Coalition contributor and a married woman who describes herself as having “lesbian desires,” recently spoke at an event with Tim Keller on the issues of same-sex attraction.

McLaughlin was asked during a Q&A session how churches could support members who have same-sex or bisexual attractions. She had two responses. One, always assume that at least 14 percent of the women in the room experience same-sex attraction and two, stop acting like same-sex attraction is worse than heterosexual attraction.

McLaughlin goes on to say that — even if you’re not married — if you’re attracted to someone you’re not married to, whether or not it’s a man or woman is “beside the point,” because “we’re all in the same boat.”

Yeah, no. That’s not how it works.

The Scriptures clearly teach that being attracted to someone of the opposite sex is normal and natural and being attracted to someone of the same sex is unnatural and sinful. Romans 1:26 calls these attractions “dishonorable passions,” — it is clearly speaking in the context of same-sex attraction — men and women being given over to homosexuality.

This passage clearly delineates homosexuality as fundamentally different from the other sins that are listed. Romans 1 describes homosexuality as the end result of these other sins — that homosexuality is the worst state of a rebellious people being “given over” to their sins. The push to incorporate homosexuals into Evangelical churches is a growing movement that has been spearheaded by The Gospel Coalition for years.

Advancing the movement even further is the Southern Baptist Convention through two of its most influential leaders, president J.D. Greear and ERLC president, Russell Moore. Between the two of them, such people as Sam Allberry have been platformed to promote the sinlessness of same-sex attraction and how those who commit same-sex attraction are likely to never be free from their desires — even upon salvation and regeneration by the Holy Spirit. Greear himself has taught that homosexuality is morally equivalent to such sins as boasting and materialism.

They are not equal, nor does God’s law treat them as equal. While all sin separates us from God, God clearly treats some sins as abominations. This is not to downplay the seriousness of other sins, but homosexuality and same-sex attraction are to be treated as sins that must be crucified at the cross, repented of, and mortified daily — not coddled and told that they are no worse than opposite-sex attractions.
