Does God Put Value on Unborn Babies?

Reformation Charlotte wrote an excellent article entitled “Abortion is Pagan Sacrifice.” The article was well written and backed by scripture. However, I can’t help but hear the skeptic say Aren’t all of those references referring to already born babies?

Somehow people think that being born is a prerequisite for being a person. That an unborn baby is somehow not a person at all. From a biblical standpoint, nothing could be further from the truth.

When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot…

Exodus 21:22-24

This section of scripture lands right in the middle of Gods laws concerning violence. The law of God is based on victim rights. When a crime has been committed God requires that balance is brought into the situation. Therefore justice according to God is repaying the evil deed with an equal and just punishment. The punishment for the unjust killing of a person is death (Exodus 21:12). This section of scripture leaves no doubt that God demands justice equally for the unborn child as he would for the already born man.

The ethic backing this law is undeniable. In the eyes of God, the unborn child is alive and deserves equal respect as an already born human.

(Side Note: Now speaking as post-resurrection believers I won’t argue whether or not the death penalty is a judicial law we must follow. If you turn from your sin and put your faith in Jesus you will be forgiven.)

Of course, there are more verses that show Gods affection for the unborn:

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

Psalm 127:3-5

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 139:13-16

If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or my maidservant, when they brought a complaint against me, what then shall I do when God rises up? When he makes inquiry, what shall I answer him? Did not he who made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?

Job 31:13-15

Unborn babies are humans created in the image of God and deserve the respect of a regular person. Abortion is child sacrifice. Abortion is murder. God forgives murderers by sacrificing Himself on the cross. He balances the scales by being the propitiation for our sin. Turn from your sin and trust in the saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
