Mark Driscoll has said some dumb things over the years. If you’re not familiar with Mark Driscoll, he’s the fallen pastor who resigned from Mars Hill — the church he founded — because he was bullying the other elders and continuing in “unrepentant sin.” (You can brush up on Driscoll here and here if you need to.)
That being said, Driscoll was formerly a staunch Calvinist when he pastored Mars Hill. After his fall, he came back (as do most fallen pastors) in the seeker-sensitive/charismatic/Word of Faith movement. An interesting phenomenon of those pastors who experience this fall/restoration cycle is that the vast majority of them do not come back to exhibit repentance and a devotion to sound doctrine, but quite the opposite. Most give up all sound doctrine and turn towards an audience-pleasing form teaching — something that’s usually required to sustain an income required to maintain the high standard of living among celebrity preachers. The Scriptures clearly warn of this in 2 Timothy 4:3-4.
Recently, the former Reformed pastor and Bible teacher denounced Calvinism, calling it “garbage” — though he did not explain why it was “garbage” until now. Mark Driscoll explains in the video below that Calvinism isn’t God-centered, but man-centered because, well, the five points of Calvinism (TULIP) starts with the doctrine of the total depravity of man. I mean, LOL! Listen below starting at the 10:20 mark.
