Tim Keller Wants Conservatives to Read the Bible and Stop Being Conservative

In an article last week, I pointed out the hypocritical position of Democrats who claim Christianity while explaining why Christians cannot hold to leftist ideology. It has been the stratagem of the progressive stream of social justice evangelicalism to undermine strong ties to conservativism creating an atmosphere of “you can be what you wanna be” for anyone in the realm of Christendom, so long as you don’t oppose them.

Tim Keller is the leading mouthpiece for The Gospel Coalition and has been urging Christians to abandon their conservative ideology for a long time. In a recent tweet, he made the following declaration,

“When you come to the Bible, you need to shake your mind free from human political categories, of liberal or conservative.” Personally, I don’t know anybody who does that. Like, nobody. There are people who do that, I’m sure, but nobody in the circles of opposition to Keller’s social justice war reads conservative into the text. I do know, however, quite a number of people who read liberalism into the text — namely, people like Tim Keller.

How do you know you’re really saved by faith? You care about the poor. When you see people without resources, your heart goes out to them. If it doesn’t, maybe you’re saved, but you’re lacking the evidence of salvation.

So why does Tim Keller need Christians to stop being conservative? Because only liberals and progressives conflate justice with “social justice” and promote the redistribution of wealth. This is not a biblical concept, it’s Marxism — the exact opposite of Biblical.

As I said, conservatives do not need to read conservatism into the text. Conservatism is a product of a right understanding of God and the Scriptures. You cannot read the Bible and come away with socialism. You will, however — if read and understood rightly — come away from reading the Scriptures with conservatism.

You cannot be a Christian, reading and understanding the Bible, and believe that it’s okay to:

  • kill children in the womb,
  • accept, affirm, and promote homosexuality and sexual immorality,
  • steal from people to give to others,
  • promote lawlessness (i.e. open borders),
  • lack individual responsibility.

Can We Get Over John Piper Already?

It seems that over the last several years, Evangelicalism has taken a sharp turn in leadership, leaving many empty chairs that were once filled with prominent voices. I think this turn started in 2017 when we lost R.C. Sproul. He was a voice the church looked to for...
