The messengers of the Southern Baptist Convention’s decision to re-elect incumbent President Bart Barber for another yearlong term serves as a crude testament to the establishment’s prevailing influence and growing sway over conservative concerns. The triumph of Barber over his opponent, Georgia pastor Mike Stone, effectively tethers the Convention to a path of progressivism, one that decidedly deviates from its foundational biblical doctrine.

Southern Baptists now find themselves under the leadership of a president with a glaring absence of firm convictions, a man who unashamedly navigates the complexities of the Convention with an air of complacency and casual indifference. This sense of laissez-faire is particularly alarming in the context of issues such as abortion, where Barber’s soft stance and hesitance to hold mothers accountable strike a serious blow to the Convention’s historically strict anti-abortion stance. His position reflects a disturbing inclination to treat a deeply consequential matter with a troubling degree of nonchalance.

Furthermore, Barber’s support for the recently disfellowshipped Rick Warren only demonstrates his disregard for the importance of doctrinal fidelity within the Southern Baptist Convention. Warren, who openly permitted women to serve as pastors in his church, embodies an unpalatable departure from the conservative convictions that underpin biblical Christianity. Yet, Barber continued to defend Warren, an endorsement that is not only inconsistent with the Convention’s stance but also symptomatic of Barber’s pattern of indulging in laxity and deviation from the faith.

The election of Bart Barber, the establishment’s golden boy, fortifies a new norm within the Convention. It’s a norm that tacitly sanctions an insidious slide towards leftist ideologies, endorsing feminism, social justice, and a softened stance on the LGBTQ movement. These dramatic shifts are not only counterintuitive to the Convention’s core values but also indicative of an erosion of the authority of the Scriptures.

Against this backdrop of progressive posturing, Mike Stone emerged as the conservative antidote to the Convention’s liberal leaning. Unlike Barber, Stone embodied a man of strong conviction, a breakwater against the encroaching tides of secular culture and man-pleasing. In contrast to Barber’s permissive attitude toward the secularization of reforms in the denomination, particularly as it involved the denomination’s use of pro-homosexual organizations to oversee the SBC’s sex abuse reform effort, Stone maintained a robust commitment to preserving the independence of individual congregations that do not risk undermining local church autonomy.

Yet, the Convention chose to back Barber, the faux-conservative. While ostensibly touting unity within the Convention, Barber’s lack of fervor to address the pervasive issues afflicting the Church remains concerning. This feigned unity serves as a smokescreen, obscuring the unchecked rise of heretics and false teachers, threatening the spiritual sanctity of the Convention.

The choice of Barber over Stone marks a disconcerting epoch in the Southern Baptist Convention, one that prioritizes superficial unity over substantive doctrinal adherence. As the Convention drifts further from its conservative moorings, we can only look on with apprehension at the potential ramifications of such a shift. The question remains: how far will the Southern Baptist Convention drift before it is too late to reclaim its roots? The re-election of a man with no convictions might just be a harbinger of more liberal leanings to come.
