The sovereign, holy, righteous, and eternal God declares in Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” The historic understanding of this passage in Biblical Christianity is that it refers to an all-powerful God who, from the beginning of time, handpicked a prophet for a specific purpose and mission. However, this passage also reveals other profound truths, such as God’s supreme authority over the creation of humanity and His intimate involvement in the formation of every individual from the moment of conception.

This makes it difficult to fathom, first off, how anyone could claim to be both Christian and pro-choice. And worse yet, to refer to one’s self as a “pro-choice Christian” and then use such a passage to defend the heinous act of murder against an innocent child entrusted to the care of a mother in her womb is perplexing to an extraordinary degree.

Yet, Democrat Congresswoman, Hillary Scholten, does just that. In a speech during the congressional debate over the born alive bill just passed in the House, Scholten quotes Jeremiah 1:5, appealing to her personal decision to “choose life” during one of her own miscarriages, while pointing out that God’s reference to the “womb” in this passage was his affirmation that it is the mother’s decision—not God or government’s decision—whether or not to kill the child.

Interestingly, she seems to acknowledge that what is in the womb is, indeed, a life. However, the fact that she doesn’t believe that it is a life worth protecting speaks volumes about the eternal state of her soul.
