The great preacher Charles Spurgeon once said, “A time will come when instead of shepherds feeding the sheep, the church will have clowns entertaining the goats!” He couldn’t have been more accurate in his prediction, not because he’s a prophet, but because he had a grasp on the biblical understanding of the nature of man and the doctrine of sin.

We often present to you one Southern Baptist Church that daily engages in these pragmatic professional performances that do nothing to advance the gospel. That church is Church by the Glades in Florida. But today, we present to you some pictures from another church that we often forget about. That is Prestonwood Baptist Church, a 17 thousand-member Southern Baptist megachurch in Dallas led by former Southern Baptist Convention president, Jack Graham.

Churches that put on extravagant performances are nothing short of an abomination. These so-called “houses of worship” have strayed so far from the teachings of the Bible that it’s a wonder they still call themselves Christian.

For starters, these churches are incredibly pragmatic. They see an opportunity to put on a flashy show and draw a crowd, and they take it, without any regard for the consequences. They put on plays, musicals, and even circus acts, all in the name of “reaching people for Christ.” But let’s be real: these performances are not about spreading the Gospel. They’re about putting butts in seats and lining the church’s pockets.

But even more egregious is the fact that these churches are unbiblical. The Bible is clear that we are not to be conformed to the world (Romans 12:2), and yet these churches are adopting the world’s tactics for attracting people. They’re using flashy lights, loud music, and over-the-top performances to try and draw people in. But what they don’t realize is that they’re only attracting goats, not true believers.

As Charles Spurgeon famously said, “It is not the business of the Christian minister to please the goats, but to feed the sheep.” These so-called “churches” are so focused on entertaining the goats that they’re neglecting the spiritual needs of the sheep. Instead of providing the nourishment that believers need to grow in their faith, they’re offering an empty spectacle that does nothing to advance the Kingdom of God.

But perhaps the biggest problem with these churches is that they are only attracting false converts. People who are drawn in by the flashy performances may think they’re becoming Christians, but in reality, they’re just being entertained. They may feel good for a little while, but ultimately, their faith is shallow and empty. They may even be led astray by the false teachings that are often present in these churches.

If you want to know what’s wrong with the Southern Baptist Convention, look no further than its leadership.
