Matt Walsh, Your Virtue Signaling Will Not Get You Out of Hell

Matt Walsh is a conservative blogger and political commentator at The Daily Wire alongside Ben Shapiro. I actually like Matt Walsh and have appreciated much of Walsh’s work over the years. While Walsh is a Roman Catholic — that is, he’s not a born-again Christian and doesn’t hold to the essential doctrines of the Christian faith — he does, in many ways, have a better grasp on general revelation than many, even those who profess Protestantism, do on special revelation. In other words, he’s gifted at being able to spot the destructiveness in our culture and society and speaking morality into the culture.

However, sadly, Walsh does not know Christ — and the eternal state of one’s soul is far more important than politics and morality. Over the weekend, a popular “Christian” and progressive author, Rachel Held Evans died at 37. This was tragic in many ways. While she was a mother of young children and a wife who left her family behind, she was also a heretic. Held Evans advocated for such ungodly things as abortion, LGBTQ rights, and feminism — things the Bible condemns. What made the situation worse is that she named the name of Christ. The Bible commands Christians not to associate with false professors of the faith (1 Corinthians 5:11).

While this post isn’t about Held Evans, the background here is important. After Held Evans passed, I posted the following tweet:

I firmly believe that we should not rejoice in the death of the wicked. Held Evans was wicked — the worst kind of wicked. She put on a nice face and led people straight to Hell. This, you cannot deny. Whether she truly believed the things she professed, or simply did it for personal gain (the Bible teaches both kinds of false teachers) one cannot know for sure. Either way, Held Evans professed a false gospel and if she died barring last minute repentance, she is facing the wrath of God at this moment. That is tragic. But that does not change the fact that God is good, just, and right in all things.

Well, apparently Matt Walsh did not like my tweet. In reality, however, Walsh just wanted to signal his own virtue to a Pagan and progressive audience that already hates him. Somehow he ran across my tweet and posted the following:

Apparently, the biblical truth of my tweet embarrassed Walsh as a “Christian.” Let that sink in. God’s truth embarrasses Matt Walsh who professes to be a Christian. Matt Walsh is doing EXACTLY what he accuses me of doing in this tweet — he’s exploiting the death of Rachel Held Evans to signal his virtue to God-haters and Pagans.

The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil…

John 7:7

When you look through the replies to this tweet, you see hatred, vile, foul-mouthed responses to me mostly from people who claim to be Christians as well. What you see are people, like Walsh, who desire the approval of man. Matt Walsh does not serve Christ.

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Galatians 1:10

I responded to Walsh. Roman Catholicism is a false religion. It is counterfeit Christianity. It gives men a sense of security and moral superiority apart from the saving grace of Christ. It does not regenerate hardened hearts, it leads men into a cycle of bondage to good works. The Roman Catholic Church is the modern order of the Pharisees and the embodiment of the Galatian curse. It is heresy and those who hold to the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church cannot be saved.

Yet, Walsh says I’m the Pharisee. The Roman Catholic idolater says I’m the idolater. The one in bondage to a self-righteous, self-worshiping religion says these things of me, then professes that he “couldn’t possibly be happier to be condemned by me.”

What Walsh doesn’t understand is that I’m not condemning him. Matt Walsh is already condemned — he does not believe in the true Jesus Christ.

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

John 3:18

Why do I write this? Because, like I said, I actually like Matt Walsh. In reality, I love him, as I do all of humanity. I actually care about the eternal state of Matt Walsh’s soul. I does not matter that he does not like me and I’m sure that if he reads this, he may very likely respond with bitterness. If I were seeking his or any man’s approval, I’d be saying and writing the kinds of things Held Evans did. But I’m not. I am in a very, very minority position. But I would like to see Matt come to know Christ and forsake his idolatrous religion.

The truth is that your good works and virtues will not save you. As it stands right now, Matt Walsh is an enemy of the cross while trying to befriend the world (James 4:4). Walsh has a huge and growing audience, and that [can] be good. But if Walsh continues to believe that his religion and good works will save him, he will find himself one day facing the judgment and wrath of God. For it is Christ alone who lived a perfect life, died in the place of sinners, and rose again three days later defeating sin and death and making intercession for those who would repent and believe in Him alone. And it is this message alone that I will proclaim until I die.

Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Matthew 7:13-14
