Today is April 1, but sadly, this is not an April Fool’s joke. Joel Osteen actually made this absurd assertion.
Much like the Roman Catholics, Osteen is teaching a dangerous doctrine of Scripture — that Mary holds the power of life over God. Let’s be clear, Mary did not give Jesus life. Period. Jesus is God, he is eternal, he is the creator. Not only is Jesus uncreated, everything that was made — including Mary — was made through Him (John 1:3).
Mary is regarded in the Roman Catholic Church in some weird sense as an eternal co-creator and co-redemptrix with Christ, but to assert that Mary gave the eternal God life — even human life, is absurd.
Of course, you could argue that Osteen is simply referring to human life on Earth. But, again, this was not Mary, this was solely and act of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit. Mary had no say in the matter as she was simply chosen by God to incubate the flesh.
