The Cult of Self-Destruction

Here we are in 2025, watching an entire generation mutilate itself while screaming that we’re the fascists. They pierce, ink, carve, and scar their bodies in the name of “freedom,” yet they march under the banner of rage, demanding that anyone who still looks and lives like a normal human being must be silenced. And, of course, all they’re straight, white, conservative, male enemies are…fascists. The irony is so thick it’s almost Scripture-worthy satire.

“Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man…” —Romans 1:22–23

This isn’t simply about body piercings or tattoos or whatever passing fad is currently chewing through youth culture. This is about what happens when God gives a people over. Romans 1 describes it as the great handoff—when men and women exchange truth for lies, glory for shame, sanity for madness.

The image-bearers of God, designed with purpose and beauty, become canvases for their own destruction. They call it “self-expression.”

God calls it judgment.

And the cruelest joke of all is that the very ones who vandalize their own bodies now imagine themselves to be the moral compass of the age. They scream “fascist” at anyone who believes in family, in morality, in the ancient truths of God’s law. They spit the word as if it were the height of insult, never realizing that their own little cult is built on conformity, intimidation, and violence—the very ingredients of fascism itself.

But this is the pattern, isn’t it? When the prophets of Baal cut themselves in 1 Kings 18, crying out to gods who would never answer, it wasn’t just religious zeal—it was the cult of self-destruction on full display. And Elijah mocked them for it. He didn’t negotiate. He didn’t try to empathize with their “lived experience.” He said, “Cry louder. Maybe your god is asleep.” That same mocking spirit belongs to our God who laughs at rebellion today (Psalm 2).

We need to stop treating this like it’s just fashion choices and political slogans. It is the outward rot of inward corruption. When you see the face of someone like this disfigured by hardware and rage, you are looking at Romans 1 come alive. You are seeing a soul so at war with its Creator that even its own body has become the battlefield.

And yet—they call us the dangerous ones. They call anyone who dares to live in basic alignment with God’s order—male and female, marriage, family, work, worship—a fascist. It would almost be hilarious if it weren’t so pathetic. The insanity of our age is not subtle—it’s screaming, shrieking, screeching in our faces with a nose ring dangling like a clown’s bell.

But make no mistake about it, though, our God is not mocked. Every mutilated body, every desecrated image of His design, every false accusation hurled against His people, is written in His book. He is patient, yes. He endures their blasphemy for a time, yes. But His patience is not permission and his delay is not approval. He laughs now, but He will roar later.

“The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble.” —Proverbs 16:4

That day is coming. And when it does, this cult of rebels will find that the god they’ve been crying out to—the god of the Self—is powerless to save them. Their scars will not testify of bravery or authenticity. They will testify of destruction and defeat. Their piercings will not mark them as enlightened, but as slaves. And the Judge of all the earth will do what is just.

Until then, let them rage. Let them screech “fascist.” Let them boast in their self-harm as if it were freedom. The cult of self-destruction is loud, but it is short-lived. Their idols are bleeding out. Their gods are dead. And the One who sits in the heavens laughs.
