Church on the Move, a “church” in Tulsa, Oklahoma puts on a spectacle worthy of nothing but condemnation during Christmas. Instead of drawing people toward the glory of Christ and the reality of what His incarnation means for humanity, productions like this cheapen the message of the gospel.
They transform the sanctuary—meant to be a holy place of worship—into little more than a stage for shallow entertainment. Places like this pretending to be churches have traded their lampstands for fog machines and strobe lights, believing that the way to reach people is to mirror the world rather than confront it.
What’s worse is that these productions reflect a mindset that assumes the gospel itself isn’t enough. They believe the message of Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection must be dressed up, sugar-coated, and rebranded to keep people’s attention. But the gospel needs no embellishment. Its beauty and power lie in its simplicity and truth—a truth that transcends culture and time.
What happened to the church that boldly proclaimed the Word of God with conviction? What happened to the pastors who trembled at the thought of leading their flocks astray? If Church on the Move—or any “church”—believes that the way to celebrate Christmas is by centering a production around a bitter green cartoon character rather than the sovereign King of Kings, they’ve lost the plot entirely.
