The prosperity gospel is far more nefarious than just believing that God will grant you health and wealth if you have enough faith. The prosperity gospel is a completely paganized counterfeit Christianity that is steeped in the idolatry of self and greed. With that comes the notion that even the Scriptures themselves are about you. They are not, they are about God — and the characters in the Scriptures are there to glorify God.
Of the worst of these self-idolizing narcissistic prosperity gospel preachers are Steven Furtick and T.D. Jakes. Both of them have embraced the anti-Trinitarian heresy known as modalism. The reason they embrace these false doctrines is that they cannot wrap their heads around God’s revelation of Himself in Scripture — because the Scriptures, to them, are not about God. To them, Scriptures are about themselves, what they can accomplish, and how they can increase their own health and wealth. To them, God is nothing more than a genie in a bottle.
Steven Furtick of Elevation Church is well-known for reading himself into the Scriptures and his flagship idolatry of self is to believe that the story of David and Goliath is about him. He has taught and preached on multiple occasions that David is a representation of him and that David defeating Goliath exemplifies our ability to defeat “Goliaths” in our lives. It is not, it is a picture of Christ defeating sin and death.
But, to signify this narcissistic attitude, T.D. Jakes — one of the modern kings of prosperity pseudo-Christianity — awarded Furtick a bronze statue of David. The reason, Jakes says, is to remind Furtick that “the head of the giant is under his [Furtick’s] feet.” It’s completely asinine, idolatrous, and anti-Christ in every possible way.
