If you’ve paid any attention to the news, you’re probably aware of the chaos taking place in Afghanistan as the incompetence of the Biden administration is on full display during the withdrawal of American troops from that nation. After twenty years of American presence in Afghanistan, we’re now seeing the judgment of God poured out on that country like we’ve never seen before.

While we understand that God is in control of all things, we should also recognize that the Christians in that nation are in great danger right now. The Taliban has completely taken over the nation and the government has fallen due to the irresponsible and hasty action by our government.

The Taliban, a terrorist organization, has no patience for anyone who does not line up with their ideologically-driven political system. For the Christians, this creates a conflict; either submit to the Taliban’s Islamic system or die.

We must pray for their peace as God promises always to be with us (Matthew 28:20) for those of us who are truly born-again. But we must also be careful to pray for the salvation of those who are not truly born again. Many of the Christian converts in these Islamic nations are of the Coptic tradition; the Coptic tradition is very similar to the Orthodox which is a form of works righteousness. It is not true Christianity, but indistinguishable to Islamic radicals.

While it’s easy to get carried away emotionally as people’s lives are threatened, families destroyed, and religions sent underground, our first priority must always be the spiritual state of these people. We must love truthfully.

And as much as we may hate it, we must also pray for those in charge (1 Timothy 2:1-2). For whatever reason, God has chosen to judge this nation with wicked rulers. We very well could be at the brink of a global, anti-Christ government. Yet, we are called to pray for them; to pray for their repentance, to pray for their leadership, and to pray for their salvation. We can also pray for their removal from office, but ultimately, that is up to God.

While we certainly hope that God will depose the Taliban altogether, that seems unlikely. We should also pray for their repentance, pray that God’s word and the gospel will go forth in that nation, and pray that God will restore peace. After all, when Christ returns:

For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” –Romans 14:11
